Mobile Security Software

As security issues appear in almost any communication media, several companies are now launching mobile phone security products.

The fact that these products are a consumer and corporate need, is a consequence of several factors:

- Better means are necessary to identify theft
- Malware is also a threat on mobile devices
- Corporate governance rules
- Users depend more on data in their mobile devices
- New legislation

According to several studies (Juniper, Alan Goode), mobile phone theft is a large concern for users, and the number of phones stolen each year will continue rising. This will ensure that companies dedicate more effort to create mobile security software for an estimated 247 million devices in the next few years.

This trend will increase revenues of companies that sell and maintain antivirus, Virtual Private Networks, data and file encryption and mobile ID managers. The total expected revenue by 2011 is $5 billion, according to Goode ("Mobile Data Security: Access, Content, Identity & Threat Management, 2006-2011").

As the number of users of mobile devices increases, mobile security software will increase accordingly, and will eventually be comparable to today's PC security market, if not bigger. 40% of this market will account for blocking viruses, spam, spyware, and content filtering.
