Security Tip 1 Keep OS And Software Patches Up To Date

One of the biggest security risks used to be e-mail attachments, which, after users became aware of the threats of opening attachments from unknown senders, decreased considerably.

However, a few years ago, the Nimda worm appeared, creating a whole new type of internet security risk.

The Nimda worm typically infected PC's running Microsoft Windows or Microsoft IIS software on websites. Nimda could infect a computer through e-mails, infected websites, vulnerable internet servers, or a network. The main difference with other worms, was that it could actually infect .exe files, where other worms just made copies of themselves. Also, Nimda sent itselfs through e-mails with a readme.exe attachment, but it was not necessary to actually open the attachment. Microsoft Outlook users got infected just by reading the e-mail. Thus, being aware of e-mail attachments was not enough, because just by reading an e-mail, your computer became vulnerable to infection.

Due to the fact that some OS and sofware releases are not thoroughly tested before they are marketed, companies release patches when security holes are identified by users, or themselves. This means that you are never actually safe from even the most common attacks unless you keep your patches up to date.
